“Dr. Nancy Huante-Tzintzun was born in Michoacán, Mexico, and raised in Stockton, California. She is an Assistant Professor at Sacramento State University and Nopal Co-Director. As a Chicana scholar-activist and community organizer her love and passion for educación is felt and passed down to her daughters and the larger community in hopes they continue to build and create opportunities to engage with justice work for future generations. Dr. Ricky Gutierrez-Maldonado is a higher education leader and Ethnic Studies instructor. He co-directs Nopal and Raíz Café y Cultura. As a queer, Chicano educator he is committed to creating spaces for young people to imagine and build better futures for themselves and their communities.

Nopal is a cultural and political education project for Chicana/o/x and Latina/o/x youth in Stockton. Nopal provides space and programming to convivir (be in community), foster solidarity, and organize. Nopal values activism/activismo, educacion/education, comunidad/community, and cultura/culture.

Our One Love One Community Photo Campaign showcases five community leaders in Stockton who are dedicated to advocating against hate and violence, as well as de-stigmatize the act of reporting hate and violence by promoting our 209 hate incident reporting tool (209apic.org). Our reporting tool is housed under our 209 Asian & Pacific Islander Coalition website and is locally operated by us, it’s safe, and confidential. We don’t share any information unless given consent by you!

By gathering this crucial data, we can work towards implementing better protection, pinpoint educational needs, and help to introduce policies to end hate, violence, and discrimination across our communities.
